The main difference is safety.  Although 254 nm UV-C lamps have been used in Industry for over 40 years, they were prohibited for use around people, employees and pets.  This is due to the damage it can cause to the retina and the skin during exposure to 254 nm wavelengths for extended periods of time.  They could only be used in unoccupied areas, usually when businesses were closed, and WARNING signs must always be in place and costly protective gear must be worn when servicing them.  

In modern times however, we do support the use of SENSOR-based 254 nm products which automatically turn off when motion is detected.  Also, 254 nm UV-C disinfection lamps are safe when installed in HVAC ducts at both ends.

No, the existing lights you have are for illumination.  UV-C lights are for disinfection, both surface and air.  Each product has a beam angle and coverage area.  They can be strategically placed to provide maximum exposure and coverage.

Certain 222 nm Excimer UV-C lights are a better fit for certain areas.  

• Downlights are best when installed over individual tables in the dining area of a restaurant 
• Overhead lights are best for kitchen areas of restaurants, live performance stages and sports arenas, industrial plants, food processing plants, etc.  
• Tri-lights are well suited in conference rooms and the reception areas of restaurants, in dining halls, and Bar areas.  
• Round lights are suitable for offices, cubicles, and residential areas such as dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, etc.  
• Gateways are indispensable at airports, museums, libraries, schools, the DMV, INS, etc.

They are excellent for restrooms in restaurants and public bathrooms.  Place one 254 nm UV-C Air Filtration unit in each bathroom--men's & women's.  Then install 222 nm EXCIMER UV-C  downlights in each stall for surface disinfection.  This provides powerful air and surface disinfection.

If you have an HVAC system, you can install a 254 nm UV-C lamp so it points at the COILS to prevent buildup of bacteria, viruses, mold and fungi.  These pathogen buildups can compromise the efficacy of your commercial HVAC system.  

For surface disinfection install 222 nm Excimer UV-C lamps in occupied areas or high traffic areas.
